Yasmin Bowers and Andrea Floyd

The Mission

Consciously Rebuilding advocates for a sustainable New Orleans by building bridges between local communities, industry, and local government to address social, environmental, economic, and health issues in the post-Katrina Gulf Coast region through programs that empower citizens and bring "green" to the community.

The Opportunity

Our blended backgrounds of environmental science, sustainable development, emergency preparedness, and public health allow for a holistic approach to create a model for community empowerment, public health outreach, education, and sustainable "green" housing. We expand our demographic and geographic scope by using existing institutions, such as schools, churches, and corporations to educate and practice "green" sustainable healthy living.

The Innovative Idea

Our model for change is a ripple effect based on the idea that one person, one event, and one moment can change a life. One seemingly small thing can change something you do, thus changing your being and affecting your future. Thus, experiential education and outreach is used to promote resource conservation and sustainability.

The Start-Up

After receiving their Masters in Public Health at Tulane University, Andrea and Yasmin decided to stay committed to rebuilding a sustainable New Orleans. Consciously Rebuilding is constantly evolving as community needs are brought to the forefront. The organization is proud to continue outreach initiatives that empower the recovering community to be healthy and sustainable. The next "Healthy Living Expo" will be in collaboration with Tulane University during the Fall 2008 in the Upper 9th Ward community. In addition to the importance of education and self-efficacy, Consciously Rebuilding will continue the renovation of its housing project.

Our Impact and Accomplishments

*"Green" Supportive Housing: recruited 60 volunteers to gut and clear 8 units; received 2 Daylighting Systems from Solatube International and full bathroom and kitchen cabinetry; accepted into private building materials donation program.

*Supportive Housing and Wrap-Around Services: completed case management training for 5 case managers.

*Healthy Living Community Workshops and Resource Expos: workshop on Sustainable Development and "Going Green" for the Holy Cross Neighborhood Association; Healthy Living Community Expo in Central City for 25 organizations and 50-75 community members.

Overcoming Challenges

Ageism, racism, sexism, and regionalism. We are not deterred by prejudices that are out of our control. We have a great support system that includes church, family, and friends. We encourage each other and ourselves. We are not influenced by outside negativity, so we maintain our positive energy as it will return full circle.

Our Current Needs

1. Capacity-building resources

2. Meaningful and mutually beneficial partnerships

3. Time management

4. Technical support
